Head of College's message

Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing.”

Arundhati Roy's words from "The God of Small Things" sums up the deep expectation which underpins the world's great Festivals of Light (Diwali, Hanukkah, Christmas).  With the festival's colours and sounds still hanging in the Indian air its easy to recall the inspiring mythology of Diwali and its story of the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness.

These festivals remind us of a significant energy in the human spirit which has always reached out for something better - to improve the human condition and to fight back those forces which strive to keep us in dark places. This is the same energy which inspires the work of UWC - "to make education a force for peace and a sustainable future."  In short, to make the world a better place - and certainly to leave it better than we found it!

These energies also find their place in the ebb and flow of a busy UWC campus - an air of purposefulness, a determination to succeed, to enjoy life, to enjoy each other's company – and, most importantly, to discover that there is far more in each of us than we think.

UWC's commitment to diversity and to engaging young people with the real challenges of humanity is a bold and courageous undertaking.  But, who knows, maybe it will be in places such as this that Roy's new world will draw its first breath!
