Head of College's message

Dear MUWCI Community,

I am spellbound by my new home. The beauty and potential of this unique UWC, poised on a hill, home to a typically exceptional group of people, overlooking valleys inhabited by rural communities with life circumstances so different to our students, wrestling with the paradoxes of our human condition, and I am in India! In January I arrived in the eye of a storm;  centre stage, mid performance, a theatre “in-the-round”, closely observed, I found a seat.

During theatre season fourteen remarkable performances drew me into their audience where I discovered the creative energy and talent of our UWC and Akshara students. The drama unfolded with increasing pace and I began to experience the energy of the storm. Theory of Knowledge deadlines approached, Internal Assessments, Extended Essays, and World Lit tutorials vied for a place with discussions on Global Issues, Popular Culture, Religion and Spirituality. Fifty or sixty Akshara students wove themselves into the web of learning. Travel week arrived, a brief moment of calm before a series of fires required a call to arms to protect our bio-diversity reserve. Another challenging calm now reigns with second year students taking their trial exams. Then the show goes on with dance and cinema and art and sculpture and environmental debates and visitors from all over the world.

In this whirlwind of exploration and discovery we continue to search for ways to make our education a catalyst for social justice and sustainability. We will soon welcome 130 “zero years” to the college as part of the INC selection weekend and they will become part of our community for 24 hours. This first taste of a UWC life may be the only taste they have but it will still have an impact.

As a stakeholder in our UWC project this message is for you.  I am sure that you care about the success of the college and about the importance of our mission. We seek your engagement and support and we will ensure that the smallest contribution of time or money is put to the greatest effect.

If you can, do please make a personal contribution to our Akshara programme. Go to “Donate” on the UWC Mahindra College home page and identify Akshara for your support. It will take 5 minutes and even the smallest amount will make a huge difference.  Akshara is doing outstanding work in bridging the quality gap in rural education.  I will thank you personally.

Please watch this space. Over the next 9 months we would like to draw on you and your ideas, your commitment, your time and available resources to help us make a significant difference.  We invite you to be critically engaged and so influence our future as we re-energise and re-arm in innovative and creative ways. Only through your active participation will our UWC experience become more accessible, more meaningful, more powerful and more influential. We are already doing so much and we will do so much more if you can support our efforts.
