Head of College's message

Dear Community,

It will soon be May Day when, every year, all over the world, millions of workers lay down tools whilst tens of thousands of students take up arms ready to face a few weeks of intense academic toil completing their IB examinations. In a UWC this is immediately followed by an emotional farewell, farewell to friends who have shared an unforgettable experience and farewell to a place, which has become home for two years.

This year at UWC Mahindra College we are delighted to welcome the distinguished scientist, Professor Shobo Bhattacharya, former Director of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Mumbai, to speak at our Graduation on 19 May. Whilst parents are welcome to attend, (please contact Deepa Eidnani at the college for details) because many parents are unable to do, our graduation is primarily an occasion to celebrate a new beginning with our students and send off another cohort of UWC Mahindra College “activists” on a journey of exploration, discovery and, most importantly, action.

In our 50th and 15th Anniversary Year we will be making contact with all our former graduates, so that we stay connected and can celebrate what they / you are doing. Usha Rajaram, who many of you will know as Head of English, has been appointed to a new post as “Head of UWC Learning” to strengthen this core aspect of our work and Nandita Deosthale in our Outreach office will “reach out” to all our graduates. You are why we do what we do! We need you to stay active and connected and maintain the idealism you had when you first ascended the hill. Without any doubt at multiple levels the UWC spirit will not have worn off but in this anniversary year we will remind you in the words of Kurt Hahn “you are needed” and seek through your action to fulfill our mission “to unite peoples, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future”.

So at this time of year we “never say goodbye because goodbye means going away and going away means forgetting*”, instead we say, “welcome”. Welcome to our new graduates who are moving on and welcome to our new students who are learning of their acceptance to study at UWC Mahindra College. Welcome to new faculty (see this newsletter) and welcome back to those who need their ideals recharged! We hope to see you! Good luck in the exams you are about to face. Good Luck on the journey that is about to begin. Those who are on it will help you on your way, wherever you travel.
